Wheeler Island

Wheeler Island is part of the Family Islands which are located off the North Queensland coast, east of Mission Beach.

Wheeler (Toolgbar) is part of the Family Islands National Park and is accessible by sea kayak, private boat or charter vessel from Mission Beach.

Camping is allowed on Wheeler Island and there are a couple of campsites with composting toilets.

Campers on Coombe and Wheeler islands must be self-sufficient with their own drinking water, fuel stoves and rubbish bags.

Wheeler Island camping area

Features: near the beach in a remote island setting. This island is popular with day visitors, private boat-based campers, private and commercial sea kayakers.

Location: on the southern side of Wheeler Island.

Access: the camping area can be reached by boat (only).

Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites. Maximum of 10 people.

Camp sites are suitable for: boat-based camping.

Camp site surface: sand.

Facilities: picnic table, composting toilet.

Open fires: prohibited. Fuel stoves are recommended.

Generators: prohibited.

Essentials to bring: sufficient food and drinking water, fuel stove, cooking utensils and equipment, rubbish bags, tide chart, basic first aid kit, insect repellent, mosquito nets and sunscreen. Read more about things to know before you go.

Permits and fees

Camping permits are required for all areas in the Family Islands National Park and fees apply. A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your camp site.
