Ibu and Bean was established in November 2007 in beautiful Mission Beach by a travelling mother and daughter team. Originally from Manly Beach, Sydney, Ibu and Bean traded the big smoke for a small village in the Wet Tropics of the Far North of Australia.

Who is Ibu?

Ibu’s seachange started with a year-long trip around Australia in a campervan followed by extended stays in Bali. There everybody called her Ibu. Bahasa Indonesian for ‘mother’, the word Ibu is used as an honorific much like the English ‘ma’am’, ‘Mrs’ or ‘lady.’ It’s a nickname that stuck and followed Patricia to her new life in tropical Mission Beach.

Who is Bean?

Daughter Claudine has been known as Bean ever since she’s been able to walk and talk. Claudine found her way to Mission Beach to work at the spa of Dunk Island Resort. A traveller at heart, Bean left the Far North to work and travel in the world’s most beautiful spots, from the wilderness of Canada to the windswept coast of New Zealand. But beautiful Mission Beach kept calling and she’s come back to stay and raise her family here.

At Ibu and Bean we take pride in stocking high quality natural fabrics, specialising in cotton. All our fabrics are suitable for the beautiful tropical climate we live in and many of them find their way back south with our visiting customers. We hand-pick our accessories personally from India and Indonesia, and support Australian small designers and ethical traders.
